Oh no, that's no fun!! I definitely need to watch both of these--especially the one on Beatrix Potter!

I'll try to not overload ya with reccs but I have a few!

-Not a movie, but I enjoy "The Rehearsal" by Nathan Fielder. It's hilarious, absurd, and surprisingly poignant. The newest season just started, and it's on aviation safety..it's a bit scary but has some interesting insights into the hubris and social alienation of airline pilots that seems to be causing a lot of plane crashes lately. The earlier season is a bit more lighthearted.

-Also similar vein "How to with John Wilson" is a mix of the absurd and heart warming

-I really enjoyed Party Girl with Parker Posey recently! Great soundtrack and it makes me wish I could have lived in NYC in the 90s!

-Orlando with Tilda Swinton which is a movie I'll never stop talking about ever!

OH, I was just reading about "The Rehearsal" and the aviation safety season--I need to check that out. I always love Parker Posey and Tilda Swinton is such an unusual bird--so watchable. She feels like she has come from outer space. Looking up "How to with John Wilson" right now! TY!

I hope you feel much better soon! I know that it’s frustrating and boring but you’ll find your energy and health again.

If you have access to PBS, try the Leonardo da Vinci 4 hour documentary by Ken Burns. It is excellent!

Thank you Roberta--and omg, I LOVED that documentary! And I'm so fascinated by Leonardo as a human. This is such a great reminder--even though I probably watched that only a month ago or so, I'm going to re-watch. <3 Wasn't it interesting to learn that he was probably the first person to ever create a landscape painting?

Ah yes, that's so interesting Miriam. I'm gonna re-watch the Leonardo doc to remind myself what they were saying about landscape painting and Leonardo...and I LOVE how they filled the space with that imagery--creating a cool respite that visually matched the coolness they were trying to create in the room itself. Gorgeous--thank you.

The first person to create a landscape painting? Wow. That’s so hard to imagine they’re needing to be a first to do something like that! It seems so normal to us now.

I'm very late to the party here - Babette's Feast, a 1987 film based on the book by Isak Dinesan (author of Out of Africa) is one of my all-time favorite movies. (Max, Prime, Apple TV, Roku). I saw it back in 87, the year it came out - and a couple of times since. I think you too would respond deeply to its artfully-conveyed message about the transformative power of art and generosity. lt won the Oscar that year for Best Foreign Film. And I also really liked The Edge with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin. I remember I watched it twice, a few years apart, and I was as inspired and interested as the first time I saw it - and I generally don't watch movies twice.

Thank you Janet! It's been a long time since I've seen Babette's Feast. I'm going to see if it's streaming to see if I can watch it again. And I've never seen The Edge, so I'm gonna look that one up!

For "old" movies, My Brilliant Career, and I Know where I'm Going. I thought Vice was good politically. I rewatch Glow. If you can find Louise Bourgeois The Spider the Mistress and the Tangerine -more complicated (used to be on kino), and few different Basquiat movies. The b&w pride and prejudice.

Hey Sarah, that bugs been lingering around here, but unfortunately, I didn’t catch it, which only means I don’t have an excuse for Netflix binging.

I found the Equalizer series with queen Latifah to be deep soul nourishment. I love the character development and that she has a back story going on while she and her team bring justice to all kinds of situations. I also love that the main characters are people of color. I can’t wait till the next season comes out. I could watch Queen Latifah eating breakfast cereal. She’s so awesome. And it is over the top violently intense at times and laced with sweet victories.

I hope you come out stronger-on fire with creative juice.

I hope you feel better soon, Sarah ❤️ A few suggestions that might help…

Into the West, my favourite movie!

Others in my go-to list: Witness, Thunderheart, The Band’s Visit…not entirely light, but I always end up feeling good after I watch these. Lots of “humanity” in all of them. We recently watched, and loved, My Penguin Friend (not the same as The Penguin Lessons). You’ll want a lot of tissues, but you’re blowing your nose anyway 🙂 Of course there is always The Gods Must be Crazy.

I believe most of these can be streamed somewhere…

If you want something short, I usually feel better after watching any YouTube videos with John Batiste, Jacob Collier, or Bill Nighy (especially his “favourites”).

Sending lots of love! ❤️✨

I’m so sorry you’re feeling crummy and I hope it passes soon. I saw that someone else also recommended ‘Oh Brother Where Art Thou’ - always a good repeat for me. I also love most anything by Wes Anderson. Book recommendations would be Amy Tan’s ‘The Backyard Bird Chronicles’ and ‘The Sentence’ by Louise Erdrich. Any of these should heal what ails ya. 🫶🏻

Sorry you're sick, Sarah! You've chosen a nice way to survive though. By the way, thanks for dropping off the e-zine on my porch. I was in Washington, D.C., of all places.

One of my favorite art documentaries about is "To Spring from the Hand," about dancer Paulus Berensohn, who became a potter among many other artistic expressions. He says the same thing Lee Kang-hyo says, "It's not a way of making art; it's a way of making a life. I saw it at the Harwood Museum when the Arthur Bell Auditorium first opened. I still refer to it in writing and thinking, especially the line "Love is attention. And that's all I'll say about love."

Unfortunately, I can't find the whole documentary to stream, but here's 10 minutes of beautiful Paulus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vry9_AycQPM

Thanks Miriam! I loved "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"--and even bought the sound track when it came out. That's definitely worth watching yet again--in fact, most of the Coen brothers movies are--thanks for that reminder! I'll also check out 'Dancing Queens." I didn't see Scorcese's Dylan documentary but I really enjoyed the latest Dylan movie "A Complete Unknown." Did you see that one?

Hey there! I loved Flow (first Latvian film to win an Oscar). It is stream able. Animation, visually gorgeous. For movies from way back, I recently re-watch Baghdad Cafe. More recently, Strawberry Mansion was engaging. So many movies. We've been watching Dark Winds series based on Tony Hillermsn novels. Big appreciation for the location and culture.

Get to feeling better!

Sarah Bush's avatar

Thanks T. I loved Bagdad Cafe from back in the day. I couldn't watch Dark Winds because they made Jim Chee the ignorant "city Indian" when in the books, his character was all about learning and maintaining the traditional ways. I couldn't understand why they flipped it like that! That's the problem when you love a book series--it's hard to accept some of the TV adaptations..I think that happened for Laurie and the All Creatures series...

For complete light hearted, well scripted distraction, I recommend “The Residence” on Netflix.

It’s a shondaland production (not a romance! A murder mystery) the “world’s best detective is quirky and genius and one can’t help but love her for her peculiarities.

‘Nuf said. 8 short episodes.

Gosh I hope you feel like yourself again soonest!
